On a BMX Bicycle Jump to the Moon My Arm Broke Apart in the Air – OHS021

An image of a large homemade BMX ramp.

Here is just a small version of the jump AlejAndro and his childhood friend’s created behind Wendy’s fast food restaurant in South Bend, Indiana. The added extension would most certainly offer “big air.” But after his artificial arm broke in the air it was the landing that AlejAndro was most concerned about sticking.

Growing in South Bend, Indiana I played a lot of organized baseball and I rode my bicycle like there was no tomorrow. For many years I rode by BMX bike to all my games. In fact, I was always riding my bike. That is how we got around. That was my first set of wheels. That was when my life really started at expand. We rode our bike what felt like around the world on a daily basis. I love bicycling.

As kids from the same community we spent a lot of time riding our bikes. BMX racing and bikes became very popular. And as we all started to get our own bike we all started to race and do jumps. Then we started to build out own ramps and jumps. We would ride around the outside the city limits looking and building jumps. Some of us were very good at big air jumps and other of us were not. I was in the not-so-good category. Now was not due to lack of desire or courage to say the least. Some of it was my prosthetic hook and it’s limitations. But I did not let it stop me.

Behind Wendy’s fast food restaurant was a legendary natural dirt jump. Kids from all around would gather to dazzle and be dazzled by the big air skills. Then one day we added an extension to this already huge jump. When I saw it I thought to myself, “with enough speed I am sure I could break the gravitational pull of the earth and land on the moon. So I got to the top of the hill and pedaled as fast and as hard as I could toward the jump and the excited onlookers. I hit the jump at top speed. At the end of the ramp I pulled up as hard as I could. I knew I was pushing my own limits by doing by taking this jump at this speed. But I did not think I would be pushing the limits of my artificial arm. As soon as I left the jump and was flying to the moon my arm broke apart in the air. All I could think was, “this landing is going to suck!”

Show Notes:

  • Big Air jumps on BMX bikes.
  • Pushing the limits of my artificial arm too far.
  • Bad things happen when you cannot stick the landing.

Giving Advice On Dating A One Handed Guy – OHS020

Two young girls at a festival are showing the peace sign in appreciating of the advice AlejAndro gave to them about dating a one handed guy.

At the Oregon Country Fair two young girls approached AlejAndro and asked if they could ask a him a question. They wanted inside information on dating a guy with one hand.

I have attended the Oregon Country Fair for 23 years. It has been an important event in my life. I have had many great experiences and have made many life long friends. It is also a festival where people are quite transparent, open, and sincere. Especially children. I must say some of the greatest interactions I have ever had as a one handed person has happened at the Oregon Country Fair. Because of this I have actually looked forward to it in a very one handed way with great joy and anticipation.

One day at the Oregon Country Fair I was approached by two young teenaged girls. I was just hangin’ out after a musical show looking at the schedule to see what I wanted to do not. I noticed to young girls looking and smiling at me. I smiled back and kept reading the the Oregon Country Fair’s program newsletter call “The Peach Pit.” When I noticed the two of them looking at me again I gave them a really kind and deep smile. The next thing I know these two young girls were right in front of me asking if they could ask me a question. I was slightly stunned by what they wanted to know about my one handed life.

Show Notes:

  • The strangest questions can be asked by strangers.
  • We never know when someone will sincerely ask you for help.
  • Not having two hands has many benefits. And can even have benefits for others.

They spoke for only a moment. Twenty years later AlejAndro saw the one handed girl working in a coffee shop in Oregon.

On day when I was leaving my job at the Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington. I was crossing the street on my way to catch the bus. Just as I entered the the crosswalk I noticed three people was the other way. Then I notice a very beautiful girl. My heart stopped. I then noticed she did not have two hands. I went out of my way to talk to her and show her my one handedness. We caused a minor traffic jam as we talked through the street light changing colors. She walked of smiling to catch up with her friends and allow the traffic to keep flowing. And as quickly as I saw her she melting into the sea of urban pedestrians getting off work. I so regretted asking her name and if she wanted to go out on a date. Who was the One Handed Girl?

This Old Man Changed My Life With One Small Interaction – OHS018

An old man laying bricks and building a house.

Growing up in Indiana AlejAndro had a paper route job delivering the daily newspaper. One day he noticed a new person on his route building a house one brick at a time. This old man had a huge impact on AlejAndro’s life.

It is always difficult to say who will have a huge impact on your life. Sometimes we do not know the where or the when it might happen either. Other times we are no paying enough attention to notice the people in our lives on a day to day basis that make a huge difference. In some cases it is the very simple and small interactions that can change your life in a small way at first. Only to have a powerful redirecting force in our lives.

For me it is a memory of a very old man on my paper route as a child who made a profound difference in my life. Every day I would walk my paper route delivering my newspapers. And everyday I would see this one old man building a house by himself. Everyday he would make ever so slow progress in building this brick house. I often look back on the one main and only true interaction we shared. I began realize he was not trying to impact me. He was just doing what he was doing. He built that house one brick at a time. And with one brick at a time in my memory of watching him everyday, and speaking with him once, he slowing changed my life.

Show Notes:

  • Delivering news papers as a child was my first real job.
  • Winter in South Bend, Indiana was cold and filled with snow. But this old man filled my heart with warmth.
  • Getting through life “on brick at a time.”
